How many Google reviews does a home service business need?
There is no magic number. The useful target depends on your market, your recent pace, and the competitors beside you.
Start with the local shortlist
Search the main service in the towns you care about. The businesses in the map pack set the visible expectation. If they have 40 recent reviews and you have 6 old ones, that gap matters more than an internet-wide average.
Recency matters
A steady stream of honest reviews tells homeowners the business is active now. Ten reviews this year often feel more useful than a large total that has barely changed in three years.
Ask after the win
The best time to ask is just after the customer confirms the job went well. Make the link easy, keep the request human, and never gate requests based on whether you expect a positive answer.
Do not buy or fake them
Fake reviews can damage trust and create platform risk. Build a repeatable request process around real completed work. Slower and legitimate beats a suspicious spike every time.
